New Carbon Removal Tech Sucks CO2 Out of Seawater Like Seashells
Finance ministers from the Group of Seven advanced economies agreed on Saturday in London to a landmark deal to establish a global minimum tax rate of 15% for multinational companies, which have long reduced their tax bills by shifting profits to units set up in tax havens, and to wring more taxes out of giant tech companies.
Key Facts
The proposed tax rules, setting up a minimum 15% rate, would be levied upon the world's 100 biggest and most profitable companies with minimum profit margins of 10%, including tech giants Google, Amazon and Facebook.
The agreement is aimed at ending the practice of countries competing against one another by lowering their tax rates in order to attract investments by large multinational corporations, a process U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has called a "30-year race to the bottom on corporate tax rates.”
G7 finance ministers said they seek to reach a final agreement on the tax proposal when G20 finance ministers meet in Venice, Italy, in July.

"The G7's decision on international tax justice is historic. It is very good news for tax justice and solidarity and bad news for tax havens around the world,” said German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz in a statement.

A team of researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is developing a technology that captures carbon from the atmosphere in a process that mimics the formation of seashells on the ocean floor, a report by Fast Company explains.
Humanity faces an increasingly difficult task reducing the amount of carbon in our atmosphere in order to reverse the detrimental effects of climate change — human activity releases an estimated 37 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.
Mimicking the ocean's natural CO2 extraction processes
Several startups are developing methods to take on the gargantuan task of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, including the Bill Gates-backed Carbfix, which extracts the gas from the air and turns it into a solid form.
To develop a technology that could carry out a process required at such a large scale, the team from UCLA turned to the natural world for inspiration. Their concept, outlined in a paper published in ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering, is called single-step carbon sequestration and storage, or sCS2 for short.
"To mitigate climate change, we need to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere at a level between 10 billion and 20 billion metric tons per year," senior author Gaurav Sant explained in a press release. "To fulfill a solution at that scale, we’ve got to draw inspiration from nature."

Huge Supply of Water is Saved From Evaporation When Solar Panels Are Built Over Canals
In an interview with Joe Rogan, famed astronomer Neil DeGrasse Tyson explained we already have flying cars since tunnels and overpasses allow cars to access the third dimension.
By that logic, first in India and now in California, we’ve invented “flying solar panels,” as they are being built suspended above irrigation canals. It’s a clever way to cut down on habitat loss due to the space the panels require, and evaporation as the shade they provide protects vital water droplets from the sun’s evaporating heat.
With the world’s largest irrigation canal network, and years that can reach 290 days of sunshine, California is uniquely positioned to exploit this emerging innovation of canal-covering solar farms.
UC Santa Cruz is investigating this method as a possible generator of solar energy that would allow for the saving of 63.5 billion gallons of water from evaporation annually, a massive windfall for a state that sometimes rations water and which regularly suffers from droughts.
However the story begins in the Indian state of Gujarat in 2014, when a pilot project covering 750 meters of canal space led to the creation of an entire canal-top solar plant in Vadodara District, and another one totaling 100 megawatts off the Narmada River.
Researchers in India found that the water running underneath the panels cooled them down and prevented them from overheating, resulting in an average efficiency increase of between 2-5%.

Revolutionary Machine That Grows New Skin for Burn Patients Unveiled
A piece of skin the size of a nickel, when placed inside a revolutionary Swiss bioengineering machine, can create a skin graft the size of a manhole cover.
Neither totally real nor totally artificial, the new machine about the size of a coffee table allows skin to be stretched to much greater sizes in an effort to aid in the millions of people who suffer debilitating injury or death from burns.
Taking healthy, undamaged cutaneous skin cells from the victim, the procedure starts by “growing” them in a lab before combining them with hydrogel. The resulting 1mm inch thick skin is about the combined width of our natural skin layers.
The technology is called denovoGraft, and it’s already being used to treat people even though it’s only recently finishing phase II trials. That’s because for a select few people, this method of skin crafting is so advanced, it’s the only existing option in the world for their condition, which could be a rare illness or a significant burn.
“At the moment we can multiply the surface area of the original sample by a factor of 100, and we’re aiming eventually for a factor of 500,” said Daniela Marino, co-founder and director of denovoGraft’s developers CUTISS.

Expert says massive green energy hub project in WA 'could power Australia'
A giant green energy project on Western Australia's south coast that dwarfs the world's largest hybrid energy operation will have the capacity to produce the equivalent of enough power for the entire country, says one of the nation's leading scientists and sustainability experts.

And WA's Hydrogen Minister Alannah MacTiernan says that, while it is early days, the Western Green Energy Hub plan holds the promise of a major opportunity for the state, and Australia, to develop a "more ambitious strategy" than producing and exporting iron ore and gas.
Curtin University professor of sustainability Peter Newman said the development, extending inland from the Great Australian Bight near Esperance, could produce up to 50 gigawatts of green energy, a capacity about 12 times the size of the current West Australian power grid.
"We have the sun, the space, the investment climate and with the opportunity that's provided for the Indigenous people to be part of this, I think it ticks all the boxes,"
